Joy in Daily Work

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and finish his work.” ~ John 4:34 (NIV)

Then, like now, the majority of a person’s day consisted of working for a living. In other words, working was a major component of Jesus’ Journey to Joy: Jesus provided.

Jesus was a hard worker who provided for His family. Can you imagine eating at a table He made? Because employment is something most of us can relate to, many of Jesus’ parables include work and lessons learned from it. All have this lesson in common: we serve the Lord through our work.

But Jesus worked for much more than His family’s financial provision. His biggest job? Check out this truth Jesus shares in John 4:34, “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”

Jesus came to do His Father’s will. And this is our biggest job, too!

A Family Guide to Joy (in All Circumstances), Joy in Daily Work (Chapter 3), lays out the third station of Jesus’ Journey to Joy (see map below): Jesus knew joy because He provided through His daily work.

Here’s our monthly challenge, something you can take on solo or with your family or small group:Joy Challenge #3: Describe how you can know joy in your daily work.
